The Mission Hall Quilts:Quilt Cottage Studio will operate limited opening hours next week while classes are in session:Machine Quilting with Sandra Montgomery Mon 18th & Weds 20th 10am til 12.30pm and Quilting Bee on Thurs 21st April 10am-1pm. Our new opening hours will begin from Weds 27th April 10am-4pm.

The Quilt Cottage Studio is a project of The Cresco Trust
Based in the picturesque Craft Village in a genuine thatched cottage, the Quilt Cottage Studio exists to promote the local heritage craft of quilt making. Along with expert advice, we provide specialist teaching; we offer a range of classes across age groups and abilities with special emphasis on accessibility for beginners. We are also custom workshop providers.

The Quilt Cottage Studio is comprised of 3 Strands –
1. Education in the heritage craft of quilting
2. Widening participation through Community and Out reach projects
3. Quilting essentials and unique handcrafted gift Items

Tea Party Launch of International Friendship Quilt

We are throwing a Tea Party Celebration Launch of our International Friendship Quilt on Tuesday 29th March 6pm-8pm at our craft cottage premises.

This is a ‘drop in’ informal get together to celebrate the completion of the International friendship quilt 2011. EVERYONE is WELCOME!

The quilt blocks are friendship stars that have been hand sewn by local people from all different backgrounds and people from many other nationalities. They represent friendship and the many cultures present and thriving in this city.

Come and Join us in the spirit of friendship and feel free to bring cake or something to share!

St Patricks Day at Mission Hall Quilts

Come along to Mission Hall Quilts on St Patricks day Thurs 17th March for some Irish themed fun!Space is limited so arrive early to avoid disapointment.

1pm-2.15pm Stitch a shamrock! Free St. Patrick’s Day themed hand sewing workshop for kids aged 7 years and up, with our regular children’s tutor Louise Kelly. Places are limited so arrive early to avoid disappointment.

3.15pm-4.30pm Traditional Quilter’s Show and Tell with Mary Good. Come and discover the local heritage of quilting in a friendly informal setting and see some traditional quilts on show, meet the maker and learn about the skill. Tea , coffee and light refreshments will be served and after a short talk Mary will be open for questions and answers about her work.

International Women's Day at Mission Hall Quilts

For international women's day Tues 8th March, Mission Hall Quilts will be hosting all day drop in sessions in handsewing to complete the international Friendship Quilt 2011.
The project began in the Friendship Club in Cafe Del Mondo and is now entering it's final stages at Mission Hall Quilts.
Don't miss your chance to add your personalised Friendship star block to this diverse beauty!

You can come along to any of the following sessions and make a new star or help us piece the quilt together- Just Drop in!

Spring is in the Air!

In the run up to valentine's Day the Saturday Stitches class and the Wednesday Sew'n'Sews made beautiful Valentines heart garlands. They looked so pretty pinned up in the workshop we should have them all year round!

Also we currently have a visiting spring display in the shop made by the talented Margaret Ashford. Our busy spring cyclist is taking her bunnies to market. If you look closely you'll see her clothes are made from our Garden Song range of fabrics.

International Friendship Quilt- change of venue info

From Tuesday 22nd Feb 2011, the last fours weeks of the International Friendship quilt project sessions will move premises from Café Del Mondo to Mission Hall Quilts in the Craft Village.

The sessions will continue from to take place on Tuesday evenings 6pm-8pm and everyone is welcome to our friendly informal workshops. Here you can learn to sew a traditional Friendship Star block in our custom built teaching space. These sessions are completely free and will teach hand sewing techniques. They are open to everyone of every background and level of ability. All are welcome!

Watch out for news of related workshops on International Women's Day, 8th March, coming soon!

All the blocks made at these sessions will be put together to build a quilt representing friendship and the many cultures present and thriving in this city.

On Tuesday 11 Jan 2011, the Friendship Club in Café Del Mondo (6pm-8pm) will be hosting taster sessions in sewing. It’s completely free and you can make, and take home a small gift for a friend.

Over the continuing weeks, free sewing sessions at the Friendship club will show you some basic sewing skills – You don’t need to have any experience!

You can learn to make a ‘Friendship Star’ traditional quilt block, and/or learn how to appliqué your own design.

The aim is to build up a quilt out of the blocks that are made at these sessions. A quilt to represent friendship and the many cultures present and thriving in this city.

These sessions are completely free and will teach hand sewing techniques. They are open to everyone of every background and level of ability. All are welcome!

New Classes for Winter 2011

As usual we have a line up of classes to suit everyone from the absolute beginner to the more advanced quilter, and our emphasis firmly on traditional quilt blocks and techniques! (CLICK ON THE TIME TABLE TO ENLARGE)

Also: New for 2011 -will be Orna’s curved piecing landscape wall hanger, an 8 week class for creative improvers. Orna has learned her curved piecing techniques from quilting luminaries Vikki Pignatelli and Gloria Loughman, and exhibited her own landscape piece ‘Ocean Breakers at Sunset’ in the Gordon Gallery last summer. We’ll also be welcoming back Mary Kennedy who will be teaching a baby quilt/lap quilt version of the Irish Chain, an excellent project for beginners. And for the more advanced quilter Sandra Montgomery will be offering a short in-depth beginners class in machine quilting & free motion techniques.

The classes are already filling up fast so get in touch as soon as possible to register your interest. We are accepting sign ups now and taking a list of those who are interested. However to ensure your place in you must pay your deposit up front. This has become necessary for us to assess if individual classes will run or not.

My First Quilt Class

Our increasingly popular Saturday Sitches club got a lovely write up on the local press on the event of the wrap up of our very first 'My First Quilt' class taught by Louise Kelly. The kids, from ages 7 to 15, were shown lots of hand sewing techniques and have really excelled themselves.(Some photos of their work will be posted soon).
Louise would just like to let everyone know that there will be a drop in session on each Saturday 2-3pm from 4th - 18 December (inclusive)for any of the kids who want to pop in for some advice or guidance on how to finish their quilt project. Just wanted to say a big thank you to our team who gave so much of their time and effort to make the show a success. Three tutors demonstrating was a bit of a record for us, so thank you Jackie, Sandra and Louise! Thanks to Margaret and Helen for their booking, driving and set up and strike down,and of course for manning the stall. And big thanks to the shop staff, Anne,Cathyann, Orna and Mary who have been packing, cutting, wrapping, pattern correcting and sample making for the last couple of months. We couldn't do it with out you. Lastly a special thank you to Louise, who not only helped with all the prep, but manned the stall and demoed while she was there. What a star!

If you've been in the shop recently you will have seen our beatiful Hallowe'en display, with our scarecrow 'Hallowe'en Henry' - Many thanks to Margaret Ashford for making him for us. If you fancy getting hold of any of our Hallowe'en fabric then now's the time, our seasonal stocks will be going to Dublin to the RDS Knitting and stitching Show- so come and get them while you still can!

Mc Calls Quilting tours visit MHQ with Carol Doak

Carol Doak brought a selection of her miniatures especially for us.

Our own Sandra Montgomery's very first show and tell.

On Sunday 3 Oct 2010, a quilting group from Mission Hall Quilts had a special get together with a group of 19 ladies visiting from the United States with McCalls Quilting adventures. Travelling with the McCalls group was quilting author and expert Carol Doak who agreed to take part in a shared Irish / American show and tell. Sandra Montgomery, a well known teacher here at Mission Hall presented her very first show and tell and Carol Doak, famous for her perfect paper piecing, wowed us with her amazing miniatures and previews of her new Mariners Compass designs on her notebook computer. It was a really lovely afternoon where ladies from mixed backgrounds, ages and abilities could swap stories and inspiration over tea and cakes. A unique experience demonstrating that a love of learning and patchwork and quilting can bring together women from across communities and indeed across continents!

Experience Northern Ireland- In New York!

Our intrepid quilters Mary Good and Sandra Montgomery are now back safe and sound after a fantastic time promoting our historic city and its quilting culture at the Tourism N.I 'Experience Northern Ireland' event in New York's Grand Central Station last week. They spoke to hundreds, maybe thousands of people passing through the station each day, showing off their quilting skills and demonstrating why Derry/Londonderry is a city of culture! The quilt blocks that Mary and Sandra are working on will be put together to create a Derry/Londonderry city of culture quilt for Mission Hall, so watch this space for updates on it's progress....

Taking Tourism By Storm!

Two of our finest quilters and teachers are off to the U.S this week to show them what we are made of!

Regular tutors at Mission Hall Quilts, Mary Good and Sandra Montgomery, (pictured above wearing their specially made Donegal Tweed waistcoasts)are taking part in a Tourism N.I initiative in New York for the next 8 days. Based in a purpose built diorama housed inside Grand Central Station, the event is designed to promote places and practices in Northern Ireland that make our part of the world such a fantastic place to visit. Various companies and professionals will be taking part and showing off the skills and talents in Northern Ireland from cooking to quilting! Mary and Sandra, both of whom exhibited and sold works in our exhibition backing June, have designed their own blocks to represent Derry / Londonderry and will be hand quilting these together while working to promote our historic town. You can see a sneak preview of these below, can you spot the Court house steps, Irish chain, Celtic knot, Oak leaves everywhere and even a little Sue sheltering from all the rain?!

Updates to Autumn Schedule- filling up fast!

We have added some new short courses to our Mission Hall Quilts Autumn Schedule, including one day workshops with Pauline Openneer, and a Tues evening beginners class, 7-9pm with Margaret Lee. This 6 week "Absolute Beginners" class will cover basic machine maintenance and short projects like a tote bag and a star cushion cover to get you up and running! Our Autumn term classes are very popular and are filling up fast- The Log Cabin Class and Saturday Stitches classes are now full. (The Log Cabin may run again in January, so please call if you are interested). The following classes still have spaces: The Knitted patchwork beginners class, Quillow class, and Egg Money Block of the Month, so do get in touch asap if you would like to join. The Linus Project has spaces ideal for beginners, this is our free class where the baby quilt made is dontated to the Foyle Hospice's family bereavement programme. Linus Project wraps up for Summer

In September we piloted a Linus project Class, which was a free beginners class, funded by 'Awards for All', where the baby quilts made are donated to a local charity helping children who are sick or in need. The Charity the group chose to donate their quilts to was the Foyle Hospice, who distributed the quilts to children in their family bereavement programme. Owing to the success and great interest in our initial class, Mission Hall Quilts ran another second term of the Linus Baby quilts class, this time funded by The Cresco Trust. Taught again by the ever patient and talented Sandra Montgomery. The Foyle Hospice was thrilled to be nominated by this project, where now grieving children receive quilts full of care and comfort made by fairy godmother quilters they didn't even know they had.

THE LINUS PROJECT CLASSES WILL RUN AGAIN IN SEPTEMBER 2010

August Craft Week with the Tower Museum 16-24 August 2010

Mission Hall Quilts will be collaborating with ceramic artist Gail Mahon on her ‘Ceramic Patchwork’ Installation at the Tower Museum. The installation aims to address and understanding of craft in relation to the ‘Slow Movement’- a reconnection to self, materials and its positive impact for our quality of life. Ceramicist Gail Mahon will be inviting members of the public to contribute, donate and engage with the sculptural works being redeveloped over the course of the week long installation at the Tower Museum. By bringing together old and new elements in a ceramic ‘patchwork’, the installation work examines the future of craft and explores the relationship people have with craft objects and their perceptions of value. Mission Hall will be calling for volunteers to assist Gail in her work by joining us to stitch and sew fabric sections that will connect the work together. This is a very exciting collaboration for Mission Hall and we look forwards to seeing the work that develops. Our lovely group of American (and Canadian) tourists in front of Pauline Openneer's Irish Tweed Quilt. They were a pleasure to host and had a fantastic time. Many thanks to Barbara Spohn and her company Travelling Together. You are welcome back here any time !

As well as the tweed quilt workshop, faciliated by Sandra Montgomery, our ladies had plenty of time to shop! This is Louise busy cutting the Irish fabric for our American Guests. We've now completely sold out!

Exciting News for the Summer!

Mission Hall Quilts and the Gordon Gallery are working together to bring you an exhibition of excellence in the local quilting scene. The exhibition will run from the 4th - 26th June and for now you can see a little more info about it here- Mission Hall Quilts at the Gordon Gallery

Scrappy Calendar Block Class

This is a fun beginners project to make a calendar block to represent each month. The class costs £30 and will last six weeks. Taught by Mary Good, a regular tutor and quilt advisor in the shop, this is currently our only evening class. Starting on Monday 10 May 2010, 7-9pm in Mission Hall Quilts. Curved Piecing projects!

We are now recruiting for Orna's curved Piecing projects, where particpants can make either a wall hanging or a bag. If you were at the open day you may have seen Orna demonstrating this technique. These are 'make in a day' projects and are open to beginners and experienced quilters alike. The dates are as follows-
11am -3pm Thurs 29 April 2010 and 11am-3pm Sturday 8 May 2010, and each day costs £15. Please call and reserve your place as soon as possible. Booking is on a first come forst served basis. Contact- 02871 362500

Kildress Quilting Group Visit

On Saturday 10 April we were very pleased to welcome Charlene Cruise and a group of 14 from the Kildress Quilting Group, pictured here at Mary Good's Show and Tell. After coffee, shopping and show and tell the group were off to lunch at our lovely neighbours the Boston Tea Party. Foyle Deaf Ladies Specialist Group

Through the support of the Awards for All funding Mission Hall Quilts have been able to offer classes to this specialist group and give them a taster of a therapeutic pastime that might not have been readily available to them before. Experienced teachers Mary Good and Maeve Gallagher, with the help of sign language interpreter Emma Mc Sparron, took the ladies through their paces on a range of beginners projects, from bags and brooches to fabric covered boxes, cushion covers and even a wall hanging. It’s been a pleasure having Mary McCauley and the Foyle Deaf Ladies group with us over the past months and now that the project is finished we do hope the ladies will join us for future classes and shop with us again. Our shop staff are keen to practice and add to their repertoire of basic signing!

Linus Project Donation to Foyle Hospice

On Monday 15 March our Linus project group, taught by Sandra Montgomery, met with Betty Fiddes, the Northern Ireland co-ordinator of the Linus Project, and Breege Mc Nutt from the Foyle Hospice in order to formally donate the quilts to children receiving family bereavement counselling at the Foyle Hospice. This successful project has grown from strength to strength and with the support of Awards for All funding, Mission Hall was able to offer a free beginners class in making a baby quilt where all the quilts made would be donated to local children in need of comfort. Good News: Following the success of the initial pilot of the project Mission Hall is committed to running another Linus class after the Easter break.
Local Derry woman, and group participant, Patricia Mc Donagh, has volunteered to be the Linus Co ordinator for the Derry Area. Well done Patricia! She can be contacted through Mission Hall Quilts.

Grand Opening

On March 6 Our Openday to celebrate the move to our new premises went extremely well, a few hundred came to browse, buy and participate in the free workshops and demonstrations laid on by our talented shop staff. Anne Rickerby kicked off with a show and tell of her 'Little Quilts', Orna Doherty demonstrated curved peicing techniques, our latest recruit Louise Kelly had all generations making pretty pincushions and Mary Good rounded off the day with a show and tell of her varied work. With thanks to Michelle McKenna and the Derry news for their fabulous coverage of the day's events.
